Colorado state law requires anyone doing any type of excavation to give notice two business days in advance. Notice should be given to the Utility Notification Center of Colorado (UNCC) by calling (800) 922-1987 or by visiting the Call 811 website.
Digging without knowing the location of underground utilities can lead to outages, costly damages, or serious electrical shocks. To stay safe, call 8-1-1 for free help with utility locating. When you call, inform the operator of where and when you plan to dig and the type of work. A professional will mark the utilities with flags or spray paint within a few business days.
Colors used for marking utilities are:
- Red – Electric
- Orange – Communications, Telephone/CATV
- Blue – Potable Water
- Green – Sewer/Drainage –
- Yellow – Gas/Petroleum Pipeline
- Purple – Reclaimed Water
- White – Premark site of intended excavation
Always call 8-1-1 before any digging project, even if you have done so before. Underground utilities can shift over time. Once marked, make sure to wear the proper protective gear before you start digging.
