As part of a major system improvement project along Highway 149 and US Hwy 50, GCEA is replacing the existing three-phase 24.9kV power line and utility poles within its utility easement.
Ward Electric Company (Longmont, CO) has completed approximately 2 of the 11.1 miles included within Phase 1 for 2026 construction. Crews will continue working six days a week through late Fall of 2026. Phase 1 extends between the Iola Boat Ramp and the south side of Nine Mile Hill (Milk Gulch area)
What to expect:
- All work will remain within GCEA’s existing utility easement of BLM lands and private property owners
- Be aware of increased construction activity along Highway 149 and schedule CDOT traffic control
- Planned power outages are expected for required construction sequencing
The full project will replace approximately 30 miles of aging distribution line serving Lake City, Powderhorn, and surrounding areas.
These upgrades will improve reliability, increase system capacity, and strengthen resilience during severe weather and other natural events. The project is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
