Electric Vehicle Program
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to drive an electric vehicle? Are you considering purchasing one and would like to take an extended test drive a little closer to home? Well, now’s your chance!
Gunnison County Electric Association isn’t exactly in the car business, but we have been a progressive force in the state of Colorado to promote EV use. To help educate our members and bring awareness to our community about electric vehicles, GCEA purchased a 2014 all-electric Chevrolet Spark (affectionately called Spark-e) and a 2015 all-electric Nissan Leaf. Both vehicles can be loaned out by GCEA members for a week at a time, to drive free of charge and without mileage restrictions. GCEA also has a 2017 Chevy Bolt, available for shorter test drives. The EV loaner program provides members the chance to see how an EV works as their daily vehicle, and think about whether planning an electric vehicle purchase in their future makes sense.
For some, EV adoption is about doing their part to save the environment by eliminating tailpipe emissions and contributing to cleaner air. For others, EVs are an attractive option due to state and federal tax rebates up to $12,500, as well as the cost savings on maintenance since EVs do not require oil changes and other routine maintenance visits. The retail cost of EVs has come down over the last 10 years, and all of those cost savings to purchase and maintain electric vehicles have led to over 500,000 EV purchases in the last 10 years, in the USA.
To help reduce costs even further, GCEA offers choices to its members with the Time-of-Use (TOU) rate. When members are signed up on the TOU rate and choose to charge their electric vehicles off-peak, they are paying the equivalent of $0.81 per gallon of gas, compared to the going local price of just under $3.00 per gallon. GCEA’s peak period runs Monday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Cars can be plugged in when someone arrives home at 6 p.m., but programmed not to charge until 10 p.m. GCEA also offers rebates up to $500 on EV chargers (beginning January 1, 2019), when members are signed up for TOU rates. Charging may be done when it’s convenient, and it’s cost effective!
Whatever your reasons for considering an EV purchase, we invite you to take advantage of the EV test drive experience through GCEA and find out why EVs are the car of the future and why so many people enjoy driving them.
