Energy Efficiency
Tips ....

10-20% of warm air from your home can be drawn into the chimney flue. You can spot a leaky damper by closing it and holding a lit candle inside the firebox. If the flame moves around or blows out, air is going up your chimney.

To resolve the problem, hire a chimney sweep for a good cleaning and to check the damper. It could reduce your annual heating bill by $500.

New Service Requests

GCEA Electric Service Requirements

To initiate a new electrical service account, or make system changes to an existing account, please contact Gunnison County Electric Association (GCEA) at 970-641-3520. We will direct you to the appropriate engineer.

Due to the volume of requests, we recommend you contact us at least one month ahead of the planned construction. This will allow time to process the paperwork and schedule the necessary steps, including a field inspection to assess infrastructure requirements. Our engineer will coordinate the field inspection with you or your designated representative.

After the inspection, the engineer calculates an estimate for Contribution in Aid of Construction (CIAC) costs and generates an application for electrical service. CIAC estimates are valid for 30 days.

The application must be completed, signed, and returned with payment for all charges, including the CIAC, individual account deposits, and application fees. After GCEA receives the completed application and payment, we release a staking sheet and schedule the job for construction. After scheduling, the average wait for GCEA to complete its portion of the project is two weeks.

After GCEA sets our equipment, we begin charging the monthly service availability fee. Requirements for energizing the service are noted below.

GCEA Electric Service Guidelines

Gunnison County Electric Association (GCEA) is prohibited from connecting any electrical service until an electrical inspection is acquired from the State of Colorado. A permit may be obtained from our office or you may download one from the State of Colorado's web site at www.dora.state.co.us/electrical. You may also contact the State of Colorado's Denver headquarters at 303-894-2300. GCEA is prohibited from recommending electricians; please obtain a listing from the local phone book or use local references. For all underground installations the service point is at the lot line on small lots and at the transformer or meter pedestal on large lots.

The customer/electrician will be responsible for installing and maintaining the underground service lines from GCEA's equipment location to the service entrance on the house. When the meter is located on the house, GCEA installs and maintains the overhead service drop wire from the pole to the house. The meter socket may be obtained from GCEA free of charge. All other meter sockets must be approved prior to installation. GCEA reserves the right to designate the meter location. The meter should be located on the gable end of the house where snow will not slide down over the meter. The meter should be installed at eye level or approximately five feet above ground level. Please remember to call for line locates at 1-800-922-1987.

Meter located on the house from an underground source pad mount transformer or junction box (Maximum 400 - amp self contained service). Call for instructions if the service is larger than 400 amps. For an underground service with the meter located on the house, GCEA requires that the customer wires be installed to within 3 feet of our transformer or junction box. The Colorado Electrical Inspector will notify us when the service has passed the electrical inspection. Please call the Colorado State Electrical inspector with any questions concerning your service that is past our equipment, at 970-641-5655. GCEA will energize the service within three days of notification of the inspection approval. If coordination is required, the electrician must call our Operations Department at 970-641-3520 for scheduling.

Meter Pedestal connection (Maximum 200-amp self contained). For a meter located on a meter pedestal, the customer/electrician will tie into the main breaker on the pedestal and run the service to the temporary and or to the house. The meter pedestal must be owned and installed by GCEA. If the meter pedestal does not have a breaker, GCEA requires that the wires be installed to within 3 feet of our pedestal and GCEA personnel will terminate customer owned secondary wires into our pedestal after the inspection. If the customer wishes to have the pedestal changed out to one with breakers, they must pay all costs associated with the change out. GCEA does not allow temporary or permanent plugs or service equipment to be attached to our meter pedestals. The customer/electrician is responsible to install any temporary construction loop or pedestal. The meter will remain in the GCEA owned meter pedestal. GCEA does not allow electricians or homeowners to remove the meter, please contact us if this is necessary.
