Energy Efficiency
Tips ....

10-20% of warm air from your home can be drawn into the chimney flue. You can spot a leaky damper by closing it and holding a lit candle inside the firebox. If the flame moves around or blows out, air is going up your chimney.

To resolve the problem, hire a chimney sweep for a good cleaning and to check the damper. It could reduce your annual heating bill by $500.

LED Holiday Lighting

If you love decorating for the holidays, there is an energy efficient option. When we think of efficient lighting we often think about compact fluorescent bulbs, but for the holidays, lighting with light emitting diodes (LEDs) can be a better solution.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE COST OF LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS HAS REALLY COME DOWN OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE COMPETITIVE WITH TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY LIGHTS, BUT MANY RETAILERS ARE ONLY CARRYING LED HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Holiday Energy Savers

According to About.com, the average incandescent (C7) bulb uses 6 watts, while a single LED bulb uses only 0.08 watts. Multiply that by a strand of 50 lights, and the savings are evident. The energy cost for running ten strands of LEDs for the entire holiday lighting season will cost about $6, compared with $4 to $4.50 for just one strand of incandescent lights.
